Sustainability and Ethics
Materials
ZLVR Studio primarily works with recycled 925 sterling silver. Certain parts of jewellery (such as bezel settings) require a more flexible kind of material. For these small parts I use recycled pure silver. Recycled silver has the same quality and durability as newly mined silver, but avoids the environmental and ethical impact associated with mining of precious metals like silver and gold.
The sea glass I work with is found on local beaches, by either myself or my friends/family. Sea glass begins as discarded glass — bottles, jars, or other objects — that has been worn down over time by the sea. Through years of movement in salt water, sand, and stone, the sharp edges are softened and the surface becomes naturally frosted. By collecting and reusing these fragments, the material is given a second life. What was once waste becomes something wearable.
For precious stones such as diamonds, ZLVR only works with lab-grown pieces. Lab-grown diamonds have the same physical and visual properties as mined diamonds, but are created in controlled environments. This allows for a more transparent and lower-impact alternative than traditional mining.
Sourcing semi-precious stones — such as agate and jasper — are sourced in their natural form, making full tracability more difficult. Because of this I try to source my stones from small suppliers and independent dealers where possible. Rather than aiming for uniformity, pieces are chosen for their individual character — including variations in colour, shape, and texture.
Making Process
All jewellery is made by hand in small batches or to order. This approach avoids overproduction and reduces unnecessary waste. Pieces are created with time and care, allowing for a more considered process and longer-lasting results. Offcuts and scraps are kept and reused.
For some designs it is possible to incorporate silver that you already own. If you have sterling silver jewellery you no longer wear, this can be melted down and reused as part of a new piece. This offers a way to give existing material a second life, for either practical, sentimental, or environmental reasons. Because this process involves melting and casting, it is only suitable for specific designs. Feel free to send an email to zlvrstudio@gmail.com to explore the options.
Longevity over trends
ZLVR Studio is built around the idea of making pieces that last. Instead of following-fast moving trends, the focus is on timeless design and durability, which ensures you can wear your piece can be worn for years. The longer a piece is worn, the lower its overall impact.
Packaging
Packaging is kept minimal and practical. Where possible, materials are recycled or reused, avoiding unnecessary excess while still protecting the jewellery during shipping.
